Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede won the men's race 12 months ago, finishing over a minute clear of Kenya's Emmanuel Mutai. Kebede will be back in London once again, as will Liliya Shobukhova, who held off fellow Russian Inga Abitova to win the women's title. In the men's wheelchair race, home hopes will again rest with David Weir, who missed out on a fifth successive victory last time around after suffering a puncture.

Kenya's Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru took the men's title in 2009, winning in London for the first time in the absence of three-time champion Martin Lel. Wanjiru will defend his title, but Lel is back as well as the second fastest marathon runner of all time, Duncan Kibet. Kurt Fernley and Amanda McGrory emerged victorious in dramatic finishes to both the men's and women's wheelchair races in 2009; further excitement is expected again this year. Much attention will focus on more than 30,000 'fun' runners whose main aim is just to finish but between them they will raise more than 50 million pounds for charity.

Reigning champion Martin Lel is defending his title and looking for a record fourth win. But the Kenyan faces stiff opposition from a top class field, which includes the gold, silver and bronze winners at last year's Beijing Olympics. With Paula Radcliffe ruled out with a broken toe, Britain's best hope lies with Mara Yamauchi, but also lining up in the women's event are defending champion Irina Mikitenko of Germany, Olympic gold medallist Constantina Dita of Romania and Kenyan world champion Catherine Ndereba.

At 9 o'clock this morning over 7,000 men and women set off from Greenwich Park along a 26 mile 385 yard route to Buckingham Palace, in the biggest athletics event the capital has staged since the Olympic Games 33 years ago. The route passes some of London's most historic landmarks: the Tower, St Paul 's and The runners range from top international athletes out to win, to Sunday morning joggers with the less ambitious target of completing the course, that in itself a fine achievement.
