Rome, 1943. In the Jewish Ghetto, the Calò family experiences Nazi oppression firsthand. Seeking help for her father, Silvia Calò finds herself at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, where Dr. Prestifilippo and Professor Prati devise a bold plan to save the community.

The Nazis entered the Rabbinical College and seized the register containing the families' addresses. At the Fatebenefratelli, Prestifilippo and Prati finalized the plan for "Ward K," a ward to isolate those suffering from a mysterious contagious disease. While Kappler organized the roundups, the Calòs refused to take refuge in the hospital.

The Nazis seal off the ghetto and begin the deportation. Pietro convinces Silvia to hide in the hospital, where the refugees must feign K-disease infection for an upcoming inspection. Meanwhile, the Calòs receive their evacuation ticket, and Ester attempts a desperate act to save Marcolino.

Kappler orders an immediate inspection of the hospital. A soldier, armed with a gas mask, enters the ward where Jewish refugees are acting out symptoms of "K Disease." The soldier is terrified by the sight and retreats: the plan seems to be working. But a new threat looms.
