The Motorway Cops: Catching Britain's Speeders

Nicky Campbell narrates as the series follows the work of Staffordshire police, with PC Ed Clarke being taken on a wild ride through Stoke-on-Trent after he spots a ropey-looking Vauxhall that fails to stop. On the M6, PC Kara Pilarczyk is overtaken by a speeding driver clocking 97mph, while PC Chris Bagnall receives a call about an illegal off-road bike riding along the pavement near Newcastle-under-Lyme.

PC Ed Clarke responds to a 999 call from a worried driver who is behind a van on the M6 that is all over the road and has nearly collided with the central reservation. When Ed gets eyes on the vehicle, the dangerous driving is clear to see and a breathalyser test at twice the drink drive limit explains everything. On the night shift, PCs Kara Pilarczyk and Tom Cordall pull over a delivery driver for not wearing his seatbelt, but the man's evasive behaviour raises suspicions.

PCs Lucy Pond and Mark Gribble join the hunt for a wanted criminal following reports that the man has rammed a police car. PC Ed Clarke is alerted to a suspicious vehicle on a petrol forecourt linked to the supply of counterfeit goods and when he discovers a holdall crammed with foreign cigarettes, the driver claims he is on his way to Lidl to make a delivery. In Stoke-on-Trent, officers chase a white van on cloned plates.

A report comes in that a driver refused to pay for fuel at a petrol station near Immingham Dock, Lincolnshire, becoming aggressive with staff and then driving off. PCs Billy Stead and Nathan Saltmer race to intercept the car, and are told that the driver is high on magic mushrooms and isn't letting a female passenger out of the vehicle.

After reports come in of a cloned car, officers get behind the suspect vehicle and start putting together a plan. When pulled over, the driver doesn't have a licence or insurance and when the car is searched, something else illegal is found that changes everything. While on patrol near Grimsby, police watch in shock as a motorbike dangerously weaves in and out of traffic, but the rider refuses to see anything wrong with what he's done, leaving the cops questioning if there is another motive for his shocking riding.

Humberside police respond to a 999 call from a member of a public about an HGV that is all over the road, with officers giving a running commentary as the truck narrowly avoids other cars and completely misses a roundabout. Meanwhile PC Martin Leak is patrolling in Cleethorpes when a car goes straight through a red light right in front of him, and PCs Emily Green and Susan Scott join the pursuit of a car involved in a burglary in Hull.

Sgt Tom Elvidge heads to Grimsby on the hunt for a prolific criminal who is linked to multiple burglaries, and is also known for not having a driving licence. Tom parks up to stake out the suspect, when suddenly he drives straight past him and the officer sets off in pursuit. In Hull, PC Billy Stead is riding out with new officer PC Megan Cetti when something catches his attention at a set of traffic lights, while PCs Luke Thundercliffe and Rich Stork respond to reports of a driver high on laughing gas in Grimsby.

Police pursue a Land Rover believed to be on cloned plates and the car later crashes on the M62 and the occupants flee Will the cops manage to catch them? In Grimsby, officers stumble across a white transit van in poor condition. They pull it over and discover it's not passed its MOT, but more digging reveals a shocking list of fails - plus the strong smell of cannabis.

PC Luke Thundercliffe is first on the scene when a call comes in from a member of the public, reporting a car crash with two occupants and a driver who stinks of alcohol. Sgt Tom Elvidge races to Driffield in East Yorkshire after a white transit van attempts to ram a police car off the road, with the occupants throwing a hammer at the pursuing car.

Officers pursue suspects armed with a crowbar and an air rifle who robbed a member of the public, and the police helicopter is called in to assist when the chase goes off road. PC's John Douglas and Joe Gorman spot a BMW driver with his foot down and when they get behind the car, the rear wheel is so worn down that sparks are coming from the tyre. In Hull, PC Susan Scott and Rich Starkie race to the scene after reports of a pedestrian being knocked over by a car.

Officers race after a white transit van, ending up boxing it in when it looks like it's not stopping. They're then faced with a very irate driver, furious for being stopped when trying to get to work as an HGV driver. His anger starts to make sense, when cops search his car and find an open bottle of lager. PCs spot a motorbike using L-Plates as a mud guard. The rider doesn't have a valid licence and has no insurance. Plus, he openly admits to drinking before his journey - but claims he's only had three beers! A team pursuing a van find it dumped - the driver has vanished and there's an open bottle of beer in the footwell

A call about a robbery and assault leads to a hunt on Humberside police's patch and after a chase on icy roads, the occupants abandon the vehicle and run. While the suspects may think they've evaded capture, PC Moff McEwan and his colleagues from the dog and drone units have other ideas. In Scunthorpe, a catastrophic road traffic collision between a delivery van and a car results in the occupants needing hospital treatment and the air ambulance being called. Moff and Dan Wright must get to the bottom of what's caused this devastating crash and quickly acquire dashcam footage that firmly points the finger at one of the drivers

In Grimsby, PCs Wade Cruse and Martin Leak join in with the pursuit of a motorcyclist who is refusing to stop, flying through junctions and sailing through multiple red lights. in another part of the town, PC's Matt Tuton and Liam Redmond lie in wait for a provisional licence holder who is driving without supervision, while PC Moff McEwan is patrolling in Hull when reports come in of a car that's linked to drugs and which could be carrying a wanted man.

The programme returns for a new run, this time following officers from Humberside police. On the M180 near Scunthorpe, a car carrying a suspected burglar hits an ANPR camera. When the vehicle exits the motorway, the police seize their chance and box it in, but the driver seems more concerned about losing his footwear than getting nicked. In Hull, PC Adam Barley stakes out the main route in and out of the city for drivers with their foot down and it doesn't take long before he spots a driver doing 59mph in a 40 zone, while PC Moff McEwan hunts for a suspected cloned car that has been linked to a recent burglary.

At Grimsby docks, Sgt Tom Elvidge races to catch up with teenagers suspected of being armed with a knife while trying to steal a moped. With no time to wait for back-up, he chases after them alone. PC Martin Leak pulls over a driver who admits to using cocaine at a party a few weeks ago, but is he telling the whole truth?

Determined not to give himself up, he makes a run for it across a field. What has he got to hide? The driver claims he's just been giving his friends a ride. But his behaviour around the cops is very strange, and a breath test confirms why.

PC Joe Gorman races to stop a potential drink driver before there's a collision. And cops stop a driver who hits almost 100mph. Will a drugs test reveal anything?

Reports come in of two men armed with sledgehammers trying to break into a supermarket and officers race to the scene to intercept them, calling in the dog unit to assist. In Hull, PC Billy Stead is on patrol when he spots a car with significant damage to its front, but the driver claims it only happened recently and the garage said it was safe to drive

On the M62, police race to clear a crash scene after a car ploughs into a chemical tanker, sparking fears of an explosion. Elsewhere, a suspiciously honest provisional driver raises eyebrows, while in Beverley, cops track down a delivery driver they've dealt with before for driving while uninsured

After a spate of moped thefts in Scunthorpe, Sgt Tom Elvidge heads to the area and quickly spots a speedy motorbike that arouses his suspicions and he starts tracking it. In central Hull, PC Moff McEwan responds to a call about an HGV that has smashed into a railway bridge and there are concerns that if the impact has been too strong, then the entire bridge could come down.

Humber Bridge staff call police to let them know that a car has just passed through the toll stinking of cannabis and with checks on the car revealing it could be a clone, PC Wade Cruse joins other units at they attempt to hunt down the car. On the M62, the onboard ANPR camera pings up for a car driving without insurance. The cops think the driver's deliberately trying to see if they are on to him. Why has the driver been trying to shake off the cops? And in Grimsby, a dog unit chases a car that fails to stop. 

The series narrated by Nicky Campbell returns for another ride out with Northumbria Police as we join their Roads Policing Unit patrolling 6000 miles of road across the North East of England, chasing criminals off the streets and locking up dangerous drivers. In Newcastle city centre, Sergeant Dave Roberts follows a car being driven erratically. When the car refuses to stop, it leads to a heart-stopping pursuit through the streets that ends abruptly when the car crashes into a shop. Then both female occupants make a run for it. And PC Jamie Leslie spots a driver with her foot down. When he pulls the car over, he discovers the driver stinks of booze!

In Sunderland, PC Martain Anderson is called to a collision where a car has smashed into a pedestrian crossing. On arrival, the driver is nowhere to be seen and the crashed car has been abandoned. Then the driver appears, carrying an Indian takeaway and stinking of booze! Cameras in Newcastle pick up a stolen car on the move. Motorway cops flood the area, but the driver does a runner. However, two passengers have decided to stay put, leaving them with a lot of questions to answer. In Northumberland, calls come in of a car crash at one of the force's busiest interchanges, causing carnage as it's taken out the traffic lights.

It's late night in Sunderland and a vehicle is refusing to stop for PCs Jamie Leslie and Máire Curran race to back up the patrol on its tail. The suspects take a dead end and ditch the car running into a nearby house. But the occupants of the house won't play ball and refuse to let the cops in! Leaving the police with one option - smashing down the door! In Newcastle, PC Andy Clarke spots a flashy car with a young man driving it. Something doesn't add up, so he decides to stop it. The man doesn't have a driving licence and the car has markers for drug dealing. 

It's a wild night on Newcastle's roads. PCs Jamie Leslie and Máire Curran stop a teen drink-driver after a party. In the West End, a driver with no licence, no insurance-and cannabis in his system-barely reacts when pulled over. Meanwhile in Sunderland, PC Martain Anderson races to a crash involving a motorbike and a car. Dashcam footage may reveal what really happened.

PCs Jamie Leslie and Jan Simsela follow a flatbed truck that's all over the road and hits a curb. To their surprise the driver is very chatty and admits that he's just finished work and has had a 'few' cans in his truck on the way home! Jan and Jamie are gobsmacked that he doesn't seem to have a problem with drink driving. On the A19 PC Tommy Wade tries to find a VW Golf that's being used by multiple people without insurance. After parking up, the car drives right past him and Tommy stops it. But the driver is less than forthcoming with his details. And at 3am in Gateshead Jamie and Jan give chase. A shocking pursuit then takes place with the car hitting a speed of 150mph, driving on the wrong side of the road and ignoring red lights.

Police are called to reports of an unauthorised car meet on the outskirts of Newcastle and after a car does wheelspins right in front of the officers. They quickly stop the driver, but he is adamant he's done nothing wrong, then admits to already having a Section 59 warning. Members of the public call in about a possible drink-driver who's all over the road, while reports come in regarding a stolen white transit van driving around west Newcastle and Jamie tracks it down to a housing estate, but the driver is cagey about his details.

PCs Marc Crammond and Andy Clarke are on a stakeout on the Tyne Tunnel looking for a car with cloned registration plates that has racked up nearly 600 fines. In the early hours of the morning in North Shields, PC Jamie Leslie pulls a driver over who claims he'd had a case of late-night munches and nipped out for a pizza but the car is not his, he hasn't got insurance and he doesn't have a licence.

Late night in Sunderland, PC Tommy Wade witnesses a Micra fly around a roundabout. The suspect then heads off road, narrowly missing a dog walker. Careering down a public footpath, Tommy has no choice but to ram the car to a stop, but why is the driver so desperate to get away from the cops? In Blyth, PCs Andy Clark and Marc Crammond spot a car with no front number plate and not a single occupant of the vehicle is car wearing a seatbelt. And PCs Jamie Leslie and Máire Curran race to a serious two-car collision on the outskirts of Newcastle.

Reports of a cloned car with a balaclava-wearing driver lead PC Jamie Leslie to keep his eyes peeled along the roads of Newcastle. After the occupants make a run for it, Jamie spots someone matching the description getting into another car. In Byker, PCs Marc Crammond and Andy Clarke witness what looks like a drug deal through a car window. The driver tries to lose them down a back alley. Marc knows the area well and soon tracks the car down. But this game of cat and mouse isn't over yet, as the driver makes off on foot with Marc hot on his tail.

At 8am in Newcastle, PC Brian Camsell responds to a 999 call about a woman drinking wine behind the wheel and finds the car out of fuel on an overpass. The woman in the driver's seat has plenty to say, apart from admitting who was driving, but her passenger gives the game away and a breathalyser test reveals a high score. In Wallsend, PC Jamie Leslie stops a pizza delivery driver with no business insurance, while PC Mary- Anne Hutchison stops a reckless, uninsured driver who wants a selfie.

PCs chase a cloned car, confront a licence-less driver with drug links, and face off with a dealer over insurance claims. On the A19, units race to catch a wanted man before he flees again.

A police helicopter spots a gang of youths wearing balaclavas riding motorbikes off-road in Newcastle, so PC Chris Kemp gets on their tail on the ground. In Blyth, PC Brian Camsell is on the hunt for car that's previously made off from police, while PC Tommy Wade gives chase when spots a grey Audi acting suspiciously.

In Northumberland, PC Jan Simlesa is patrolling the morning commute when a vehicle linked to drugs passes right by him, so he quickly spins around and stops it, discovering a driver dressed in his pyjamas and dressing gown nipping out for breakfast.

In Sunderland, PC Martain Anderson is on the hunt for a van linked to drug dealing and organised crime. After spotting it on a roundabout in the city centre, Martain gets behind it. The van parks up, but as Martain approaches the vehicle, the driver makes a run for it. Martain gives chase: the driver can't run fast enough, and ends up in line of sight of Martain's Taser. A quick search of the van reveals why he was so desperate to get away. It's packed full of drugs!PC Brian Camsell is on patrol around the streets of Newcastle when a misted-up car draws even more attention to itself when one of passengers cleans the window with two fingers! Brian spots the cheeky passenger isn't wearing a seatbelt either. Brian pulls over the car to discover three teenagers already in party mode heading to a festival. The driver is mortified that his mate has flicked the Vs to a passing police car… and crestfallen to discover the seatbelt offence as well. Luckily for him, Brian's in the mood for some stern words rather than a ticket.Finally, in the early hours of the morning in Sunderland PC Will Hunter spots a white van whose driver he's sure is trying not to get noticed by the police. He tracks the vehicle to a housing estate and when he clocks the man behind the wheel Will recognises a repeat offender he's had previous with, a known disqualified driver. The driver doesn't take kindly to being stopped. Or being told the van appears to be stolen!

PC Will Hunter pursues a car suspected of having cloned plates and when the driver eventually pulls over, the officer finds the driver aggressive, argumentative and smelling of alcohol, as well as unwilling to do a roadside breath test. In Northumberland, PC Chris Kemp is trying to find a car that refused to stop from motorway cops the previous night and tracks it down, but as soon as the occupants spot him they race off.

Outside Newcastle, PCs Jan Simlesa and Jamie Leslie are called to a multi-car pile-up on the busy A1, including a coach full of Newcastle United fans involved desperate to get to an away match in time. In rural Northumberland, Sgt Dave Roberts races to a crash between a car and a bicycle that is so severe that the vehicle has flipped onto its roof and the injured cyclist is being treated by paramedics.

In Sunderland, PC Will Hunter patrols the morning rush hour in an unmarked patrol car, when right under his nose a driver hits the gas and dangerously overtakes other vehicles. Will catches up with the driver who claims he was in a rush because he's late for work. But Will smells booze. The driver was out for a drink until 1am. When Will gets out the breathalyser, will the driver be over the limit the morning after the night before?Outside Newcastle, PC Brian Camsell is on the hunt for a suspected cloned car. Brian tracks it down and gets behind it, calling in more patrols to surround the vehicle and bring it to stop. The driver claims to have bought the car that morning for cash – with no receipt. But a search of the car reveals a set of number plates and accessories often favoured by thieves. Will Brian get to the truth?On the A1, PC Jan Simlesa watches a pickup truck fly past him. Jan hits speeds over 100 mph just to try and catch the driver, then witnesses him swerving all over the road and bullying other cars out of his way. Jan's seen enough and pulls him over, only to find and obstinate young driver, who's blaming his shocking driving on the vehicle's tracking. Even when presented with the video evidence the driver is still full of excuses. But Jan won't let him have the last word.

PCs Jamie Leslie and Jan Simlesa are teamed up in North Tyneside when they spot a shifty driver in a car worse for wear. As the vehicle turns into a cul-de-sac they hit the blues and twos but the driver has no plans to come quietly. Caught in a dead end, he rams the police car, sparking a high speed pursuit. The driver finally sees sense and stops, but he's short tempered and, even worse, stinks of booze. When a roadside breath test is suggested, he makes his true feelings known.In Sunderland, PC Mary-Ann Hutchison's cop car appears to spook an Audi driver into a last-minute turn and anear miss. Thinking he has something to hide, Mary-Anne gets on his tail. He looks to have got away, until another motorway cop car gets behind the suspect in the city centre. Seeing the net closing in, the driver ditches the car and runs into a building site. But there's nowhere to hide with the police chopper on the case. When the cops on the ground catch up, the man reminds Mary-Anne they went to the same school!Later, Jan and Jamie are called to support their sergeant in solving a roadside mystery. A driver is on trade plates, claiming to be on a test drive. The only problem is, it's the middle of the night and the test drive has been up and down the country! Matters aren't helped, when Jamie tries to get to the truth and the driver changes his story not once or twice, but three times. Will Jamie manage to work out what's fact and what's fiction?

In Gateshead a child has been knocked off his bike by a car outside a school. Sergeant Dave Roberts picks up the call and races to the scene. The boy is complaining of hip pain but the wait time for an ambulance is three hours. Police medics assess the boy, and they are worried about the level of his injuries. Time is against Dave as he tries to look after the child and get to the bottom of how the accident occurred.PC Mary-Ann Hutchison is patrolling near Sunderland when she receives a call from the police chopper – officers above have witnessed a man being assaulted and his assailants speeding away in a car. Guided by the helicopter, more units race to the scene and stop the car. The two occupants aren't being very co-operative, leaving Mary-Ann and the other officers with a tough job trying to work out what's actually happened.It's late at night and Martain spots a driver in a hurry in Sunderland. Martain pulls him over and alerts the man to his manner of driving. It turns out to be an emergency – a family member has been craving mozzarella dippers and so he gallantly nipped out and was determined to get the fast food back fast. Cheese lover Martain understands, but it's still no excuse for potentially getting points on your licence.

When he spots it pulling out of a side street, he gets on its tail, but the driver puts his foot down, and it's now a pursuit. The cops use tactics, bursting the car's tyres twice, but the driver still keeps going, refusing to stop despite two flat tyres. In a bid to shake off Dave, he makes the deadly decision to drive the wrong way down the A1, straight into oncoming traffic! Dave and more units track the car from the opposite side of the highway, but will the driver come quietly?PC Jan Simlesa gets a report of a drink driver in the North Shields area. The driver has been witnessed worse for wear, trying to buy more booze, and then driving away. Jan and PC Jamie Leslie race to the scene and manage to get the car stopped. To their astonishment, the driver is very relaxed, openly admitting to having had a few drinks and even jokes that he'll fail the breath test. It gets worse when he confesses to being uninsured, it's the passenger's car – who turns out to be on her first date with the driver!Police get a call about a woman suspected to be high on drugs driving a car. Jamie heads to the location the vehicle was last spotted and quickly finds it. Now all he must do is get the car stopped. The only problem is while he's working out a plan the driver goes straight through a red light. Jamie gives chase and pulls it over to find that he's arrested the woman before – but this is no happy reunion, and the driver is less than happy to see Jamie again!

In the middle of the night in Sunderland, PC Will Hunter spots a BMW with a bust tyre, spitting out plumes of smoke. As he turns around to follow it, the driver decides to ditch the car in the middle of the road and make a run for it. Will chases him on foot, but he disappears into thin air. Will searches the car, which looks like it's been in an accident. The driver has left his mobile phone behind and checks reveal he lives nearby. Time for Will to pay the driver a home visit and see what he has to say!In Newcastle PC Brian Camsell's on the hunt for an uninsured driver. After tracking her down, the driver is adamant she's insured the car on a day policy, but can't produce her policy claim because she has no phone signal. Luckily Brian has great reception on his mobile, and a quick call to the Motor Insurance Bureau reveals the driver has been trying to take out a policy while in the back of Brian's police car!On the nightshift, police receive reports of a massive unauthorised car meet taking place on an industrial estate. When Brian gets there he's confronted with boy racers buzzing through the streets while dozens of people watch on. As Brian prepares to disperse the crowds, a car noisily draws his attention. He pulls over the young driver, who gets a lesson in tyre standards in front of a jeering audience!

In Sunderland PC Martain Anderson is searching for a disqualified driver with a reputation. On previous stops he's made no bones about being anti-police. Martain tracks the driver down to a back street and is asked to explain who he is to the already antagonistic suspect - Martain's response "I'm a police officer, what do you think I am, in fancy dress?!" The driver tests Martian's patience even further when he declares he is well aware he's disqualified, but as far as he's concerned, the law doesn't exist, and he doesn't need a driving license to travel on the roads!Sergeant Dave Roberts is behind a car linked to drug dealing in Newcastle city centre. More motorway cops join to help Dave get the car stopped, but as soon as patrols pull it over, the passenger legs it with officers in hot pursuit. Dave is left to speak to the apparently shocked driver; but if they've nothing to hide, why run? A search of the vehicle soon answers that question.It's the middle of the night and PC Will Hunter has the munchies, so arranges to meet up with Martain at a drive-thru burger joint to get some food. In a first for Will, while ordering, his in-car camera alerts him to a stolen car also in the queue! Will and Martain quickly hatch a plan to catch a thief. The stop turns into a standoff, but as Marc delves deeper into his driving history, making a call on the move is the least of this motorist's worries.In Sunderland, PC Will Hunter and PC Mary-Anne Hutchison don't like the look of a car that's seen better days. As the driver pulls in to get his tyres checked, he spots the cops, ditches his wheels and makes off on foot. But he's no match for Will and Mary-Anne who soon catch up with this slippery customer. But what does he have to hide?A force-wide hunt for two stolen cars leads Jan, Marc and Jamie to the seaside town of Whitley Bay. As Jamie goes it alone up against one suspected car thief, Jan and Marc race to back up their fellow officer. Once they have the suspect in cuffs, Jan and Marc turn detective and get help from the owner of the stolen cars to track down the remaining vehicle. But as they close in, what will be waiting for them?
