In Swannanoa, Kevin helps Jim's brother waterproof a bathroom. In North Asheville, he joins father and son roofers. In East Asheville, he helps remove rot and replaces the damaged area of the deck.

Kevin visits a North Carolina high school carpentry program that's helping the community. Meanwhile Tom helps homeowner Paula turn an antique chest into a bathroom vanity.

In Asheville NC, Mauro helps Paula stain her front door. Jenn and the North Asheville landscaper make a new retaining wall and steps with boulders. Kevin learns a new way to install an interior door.

The team heads to Needham to meet Liz and Patrick in their 1896 Queen Anne, exploring plans for a new layout and rear addition. Jenn, Mark, and the homeowners' son kick off the project by removing and saving the old brick walkway.

Kevin and Tom remove and save the kitchen cabinets for reuse. Up on the roof, Charlie and Mark tackle the chimney teardown. Later, Kevin meets with the architect to learn the homeowner's vision before checking in on foundation plans with Charlie.

Kevin and Charlie work together to remove aluminum siding from the house. Kevin heads off site to hear about the company that will take the siding away to be recycled. Back at the house, Kevin, Charlie and Tommy install a new steel beam.

Richard meets with the HVAC subs who are here to re-duct the house to make the system more efficient. Charlie demos the third-floor ceiling to make room for new Episode Descriptions Season 47 insulation. Meanwhile, Tommy and Kevin install a double-hung window located in the dining room that looks onto the front porch.

Charlie visits a made-to-order window trim factory in Springfield, MA. Later, he and Tom install edge boards on the new deck. Kevin joins later to finish the tongue-and- groove decking. In the front yard, Jenn and Patrick discuss landscaping plans.

Jenn and Mark build a backyard brick patio. Meanwhile, Kevin visits a lumber business to see the homeowners new floors being made. Later, Kevin and Charlie work to weave in salvaged floor strips with the original flooring.

Kevin checks on heated bathroom floors, custom Cape Cod cabinetry, and revamped bookcase built-ins as the crew blends new upgrades with original details in a historic Needham home.

In Needham, Kevin O'Connor checks on a transformed Victorian with new floors, a reimagined dining room, and a 130-year-old China cabinet relocated into a new wall. Bold wallpaper and trim redefine the powder room, Heath Eastman fine-tunes primary bath lighting, ducts get a thorough post-reno cleaning, and Tom Silva restores the original front door in preparation for new mortise hardware.

Kevin O'Connor and the team wrap up the Needham project on a snowy move-in day, unveiling a transformed turn-of-the-century home. An open kitchen and family space, new mudroom, expanded kids' rooms and baths, a reimagined primary suite, expanded basement, new attic HVAC, and refreshed landscaping and exterior all work together to create a low-maintenance, energy-smart home for a growing family.

Kevin demos a wall in the primary bedroom. Tom frames an exterior wall to tie old & new spaces together, Richard reviews shared plumbing for the ADU, while the electrician buries a new 400-amp service to feed both homes.

Vinyl siding goes up on the main house and ADU as Kevin reveals the ADU's framed layout. Richard reviews basement HVAC while a team upstairs installs a three-panel slider to connect indoor and outdoor living.

The crew is back in Massachusetts to start a new project-a modest 1902 Victorian in the town of Newburyport. Kevin O'Connor and Tom Silva meet Jenn Nawada outside to discuss her plans for the landscape. Inside, they meet homeowners Palen and Melissa and are given a tour. Richard talks about relocating the mechanicals. Charlie Silva meets with the crew to discuss possible challenges.

The 1902 house is ready for demo. The main power is disconnected, and temporary power is run for safe working. Asbestos abatement is performed at the house after a linoleum sample collected and tested confirms the presence of asbestos. The back bump out is removed. A 75-year-old carpenter talks about working with Parkinson's disease. The front porch is demoed, leaving the roof intact.

Work is underway for the new three-story bump out, and the interior is fully demolished in preparation for the new modern floor plan. An old narrow and steep staircase is replaced with a new winder staircase. The homeowner visits the town museum to learn about the history of her home. A bulge and lean-proof retaining wall is built. The City of Newburyport wastewater treatment facility is toured.

Work continues at the house. Tom Silva shows how to shingle a roof valley. Finish carpenter Kevin Rafferty is challenged with making the fireplace mantel stand out. Charlie Silva begins trimming the windows with a prefabricated trim system. Design showroom owner Kerry Vaughn helps homeowners Palen and Melissa select furniture. The newel post and balusters on the original staircase are extended.

From demo day to design, we follow every step as the homeowners decide on the components and the crew converts a decades-old butler's pantry kitchen into an up-to-date kitchen for the future.

The guys begin restoration of an 1887 Queen Anne Victorian Cottage.  Kevin hears about preserving historic details while updating the interior space and creating a new garage and master suite

Decorative Queen Anne style barge rafters are reproduced for the garage addition.  The antique windows get restored and primed in the shop, re-glazed, and then returned to the house for installation.

Chimney bricks are cleaned and repurposed for a new, straight chimney.  Staggered shingles are reapplied.  Kevin O'Connor learns about glass orbs hidden on Block Island.  Richard Trethewey shows a new shower drain.

After months of meticulous restoration, the stained glass windows are ready to be reinstalled.  Electrician Ben Giles has an apprentice.  Tom Silva re-creates original shingles.  Landscape meeting with homeowners.

Original house details such as the Yankee gutters and corbels are installed. Host Kevin O'Connor catches up with the electrician's apprentice. Richard Trethewey looks at the new tankless hot water system.

Trees and sod arrive at the house.  The deck hatch is installed, and inside, a Wifi lock and new rangehood are placed.

Work happens in the kitchen.  Kevin and Tom tackle the molding, and the pantry gets a secret door.  Countertops, backsplash, and tile are installed, and a new wood mantle goes around the gas fireplace.

The abandoned Seaside Victorian Cottage is restored to its original beauty.  A new addition matches the existing architectural details, and the new hardscape and landscape anchor it to the corner lot.

"This Old House" returns to Dorchester, Mass., the home of the first This Old House project, to follow the renovation of a triple decker that was burned due to illegal fireworks.

Removing asbestos from exposed ductwork; a plumber works on dormant pipes; Jenn visits a community garden; architectural historian Arthur Krim talks about three-deckers; Tom and Charlie pull off the melted vinyl siding.

The back porches on the triple decker are brought to code.  Ice blasting is used to get rid of the fire odor.  New vinyl siding gets installed on the entire house while homeowner Carol considers new accent colors to match the siding.  Framing begins inside.

Jenn Nawada brings together a team to create an urban patio.  Heath Eastman rewires part of the house with intact plaster ceiling.  Charlie and Tom Silva hang a new fire rated door.  Richard Trethewey explains how a new tub is fitted in.  Kevin and Tom install a replacement window.

Kevin finds Tom working with the new apprentices on the front door and learns about YouthBuild.  Tom and Charlie teach them about mineral wool insulation. Homeowner Carol looks at kitchen cabinets and counters. Richard works with James on the three separate HVAC systems.

Mauro works with the apprentices to fix the plaster damage.  Richard meets plumber Ronnette to learn about the new sprinkler system.  Kevin joins homeowner Carol and her sister Willie to shop for tile and appliances for all three levels of the house.  The glass doors get repaired by an expert.

Tom and Kevin reinstall cabinets that survived the fire, and Tom teaches apprentices to trim a window.  HVAC contractor James shows Richard the plan for hot water, while Homeowner Carol and her sister shop for appliances.

The apprentices attend a roofing class and then put their skills to practice.  Back at the triple-decker, a vinyl floor goes in, Mauro touches up the cabinets, and Tom and Charlie install French doors.

It's been over a year and a half since the fire, and the triple decker is just about ready for the homeowners to return.  Kevin O'Connor checks out what's left to do in all three units, both inside and out.

Illegal fireworks caused a fire in the Dorchester triple decker. Charlie Silva along with local contractors put this house back together. After a long wait, Carol and family can now move back home.

The new season kicks off with a ranch house in Westerly, RI. Inside, Tom and Kevin tour the house and admire the knotty pine paneling

At the old Westerly Ranch House, the roof was disassembled to add a new level, but the original chimney is going to be in the way of the open floor plan concept on the first floor.

The open concept living space requires extra planning for support of the second story.

The crew stands up the second floor walls, and three new apprentices arrive as part of the Generation Next program.

Kevin O'Connor reviews the progress of the Westerly house.  Tom Silva and Jeff Sweenor work on the main staircase at Jeff's shop and then they bring it to the house to install.  At the Idea House, Kevin looks at new clapboard siding technology.  Richard Trethewey tours a factory to see how a furnace is built and then watches one being installed at the project house.

Tom Silva and Jeff Sweenor begin work on a coffered ceiling in the living room.  Jenn Nawada watches as local Westerly granite is cut to size for backyard steps.  Richard Trethewey reviews the complex septic system as it goes in.  In Ohio, Kevin O'Connor learns how the interior doors are built.  Back in Westerly, Jeff installs one of those doors.

The new propane tank gets buried in the backyard.  Norm advises an apprentice in composite decking.  Jeff and Tom add final touches to the coffered ceiling.  A shelving system goes into the new office, and applies a stone veneer to the new chimney.

Jeff Sweenor shows Kevin O'Connor how he installs floating oak shelves and a mantel.  Norm Abram panels the playroom using the original knotty pine boards.  Kevin visits the apprentices at a timber framing school, then he takes a tour of Westerly.  Jenn Nawada uses Westerly granite for backyard steps.

Norm uses old pine from a local sawmill to make a coffee table.  Mauro teaches apprentice Kathryn to whitewash the knotty pine paneling.  Tommy and Jeff build a pergola for the deck.  Kevin helps with a shutter assembly.  Electrician Ben shows apprentice De'Shaun how to light the pergola.

As the project winds down, the televisions are mounted, and the blinds and curtains get installed.  Richard takes a look at the new water heater.  Jenn watches the final plants go in and works to install outdoor lighting.  The old flagpole comes down for a touch up.

The old ranch is transformed into a Dutch Colonial thanks to Jeff's team.  Kevin and Tom take the tour with the homeowners, and Norm presents the pine coffee table he made with local reclaimed wood.  Outside, Jenn sees the last of the hydroseeding and gives Tom the garden tour.  Everyone meets at the refurbished flagpole to raise the flags.

A year after California's worst wildfire, the people of Paradise are still clearing the devastation where about 90% of homes were lost.  Kevin, Tom, and Richard meet three families determined to rebuild according to the wildland urban interface codes.

Richard learns about automatic sprinkler systems. Kevin sees a simulator that shows how the Camp Fire spread. Tom inspects a vent designed to resist embers. Another project gets the green light.

Luke and Crystal are moving into their home. Kevin visits a fire test lab, and Jose and Anna's house gets roof shingles. Mark installs a stone veneer at Avonlea and Joey's house. Then, Kevin tours farms around Paradise, and Jenn meets an architect who designed a town memorial.

Paradise residents discuss their determination to rebuild. Tom inspects engineered siding and fire-rated sheathing, and Richard looks at a solar backup battery. The former Paradise fire chief discusses advanced preparation with Kevin, and at the Hope Plaza Memorial ground-breaking, the heroes and survivors are honored. Then, Luke and Crystal celebrate moving in.

Homeowners John and Molly plan to put the history back into their 1890s shingle-style home. They'll remove ‘70s carpet, repair cracking balusters and transform the front entry, restoring the home's original beauty and updating it for modern living.

Mark McCullough finds granite on the property to match a new stone wall to the old. Heath Eastman buries the electrical underground. Kevin O'Connor, homeowner Molly and her kitchen designer Michele look for design inspiration. Then, Tom Silva creates a barrel ceiling.

Tom and Charlie Silva install rounded-top windows in the breakfast room, and an easy-install roof shingle goes down. Roger Cook and Kevin O'Connor go fishing while Tom adds a custom diamond detail with the siding. Radiant heat goes in somewhere unexpected: the ceiling.

Tom repairs 130-year-old pocket doors, and a new type of solar goes in. Jenn works with landscaper Fred to build a boulder wall. Richard gives a lesson on a modern heating system, and father Mark and son Erik Ferrante showcase the art of mosaic tile installation.

The original leaded glass windows are repaired, and Jenn and Fred plant a bed of perennials along the new driveway. Mini splits solve a ductwork problem, and homeowner Molly and her designer Shelby make design decisions. Then, Tom tackles tricky original trim.

Richard learns about the invention of the Stillson wrench, and Mauro repairs old plaster. Norm then repairs broken balusters, and Heath installs a new panel. Venetian plaster goes on the dining room ceiling.

A brass handrail is created. Mauro paints a chalkboard finish, and repaired balusters get reinstalled. Richard gives a lesson in make-up air, and work begins on a custom table. Heath talks smart electricity.

Work is complete on the Cape Ann Shingle Style project. The team tours the finished home, celebrating all of the repaired historic details and the new elements that keep with its original style.

Tom and Kevin cross the bridge from Newport, RI to Jamestown where they tour the next project – a 1920's bungalow which will become a larger net zero house.  They meet the family and builder.

New apprentices join the team in Rhode Island as the roof goes up.  The house gets sheathed.  It's the finish line at Judith's house in Charleston.  Kevin and Tom take the grand tour.

Insulation is crucial to a net zero house.  Jeff and the apprentices start the work.  Dana shops for efficient yet decorative lighting.  Tom and Jeff work with the apprentices to build false rafter tails and then install them.

Roof insulation is next step at the net zero house.  Richard tours the basement of The Breakers in Newport.  Kevin meets Congressman Norcross at the house, who is also an electrician.  Apprentices install and flash windows.

In just a few short weeks the grass will go in, and luckily Roger has a good solution.  Roger joins Jenn and Kevin at a nearby sod farm where hundreds of acres of environmentally-friendly grass is grown.

Richard demonstrates how an energy recovery ventilator works, using red and blue smoke to illustrate the flow of indoor air and outdoor air through the core of the machine.

Today is the day the net-zero house gets turned over to the Powers family.  Kevin and Tommy pick up builder Jeff at the Idea House and drive to Jamestown for the big reveal

While old fixtures are salvaged and asbestos is removed at the house, Norm, Richard and Kevin head back to where it all began 40 years ago, in Dorchester, MA.

Outside, the foundation has been poured and framing has begun.  Norm teaches Erick and Carly how to lay the sill.

Like most Mid-Century Moderns, ours has deep soffits.  Tom and Charlie fashion them out of PVC.  Tom explains the need to compensate for expansion and contraction based on the weather.

One of Norm's first projects for This Old House was to install a skylight on our first renovation in Dorchester, MA. Today Norm teaches the next generation of tradespeople how to master that skill.

The final roof section of the house is over the new living room addition. It's unique because it cantilevers out over a balcony. But as Kevin finds out from Tommy, that means installing the rafters takes more care.

This Old House opens a brand new season by helping the Sharma family renovate their 1940s house on Boston's famous Charles River.

The entry hall's new foundation is prepped; the sun porch is demolished; a 16-foot section of the rear foundation wall is cut and dropped so that work on the new family room can commence. Also: a visit to a gatehouse (now a private home) that belonged to the estate that once occupied the neighborhood.

Tom uses a crane to lift a 17-foot steel beam.  Norm sees the insulated concrete forms used for the foundations and above-grade walls.  Tom and Kevin discuss new lead laws and the kitchen is gutted.
