When Debe Atrops was murdered, her daughter, Rhianna Stephens, was just 8 months old. More than 30 years later, a cold case team from Washington County took a fresh look at the case by talking to witnesses and running new tests on old evidence. The team thought they had enough to prosecute Debe's estranged husband at the time of her murder, Bob Atrops, who is also Stephens' father. Stephens is convinced they have the wrong man – after losing her mother, she fears losing her father too. 

The investigation into Katlyn's death, which was initially reported as a medical emergency after her 4-year-old daughter found her unresponsive. Evidence soon revealed she had been strangled with phone charging cables in what prosecutors called a "cold-blooded and calculated" attack following a recent breakup.

On Dec. 23, 2023, police were called to a Texas home where two teenagers had been shot. Eighteen-year-old Ethan Riley died from his injuries, while 19-year-old Ben Bliek survived. Their friend, 17-year-old Connor Hilton, was arrested and later confessed to the shooting. Hilton and his parents sat down for an exclusive interview with 48 HOURS. He claims the shooting was triggered by a reaction to a popular prescription acne medication, saying it caused him to experience homicidal thoughts. Prosecutors, however, reject that explanation and say the evidence points elsewhere.

When sheriff's deputies were called to the northern Idaho home of distraught former state trooper Dan Howard, something didn't seem right. Howard told investigators he found his wife dead in their bathtub, with a gunshot wound to her head. 

Sarah Harris was a bright, young Maryland woman who dreamed of a career in medicine. On the morning of Jan. 26, 2022, she was found unresponsive on the floor of the home she shared with her boyfriend, Dr. James Ryan. Ryan told police it was an overdose, but Harris' family believed he was responsible.

Police have searched for 23-year-old missing mom Jermain Charlo since she vanished in June 2018 from Missoula, Mont. Now, six years after she disappeared, 48 HOURS will feature never-before-seen images of the missing woman.

In April 2018, in the Florida Gulf Coast town of Eastpoint, a killer had struck. Aileen Seiden's beaten body was found dumped near a highway. The next day, a bloody motel room was discovered nearby. The back-to-back scenes prompted investigators to see if the two were connected.

Police were called to the Minnesota apartment of 32-year-old nurse Alex Pennig in December 2022. Her friend, Matthew Ecker, told first responders that Pennig had shot herself in the head. Officers arrived to find Pennig lying on her back in the bathroom. However, officers noted unusual findings, including the position Alex was found in. The gun was found with her left hand on it, but Alex was right-handed. So, was it a tragic, self-inflicted act, or something more sinister?

The 2021 incident in Farmersville, Ill., began like any other date night. Smith and Reeves met online and decided to go on their first date the night before Thanksgiving. But their evening together ended in horror, when an intruder entered Smith's home sometime after 1:00 AM. Reeves was shot and killed, while Smith, who was shot in the head, barely survived.

48 HOURS delves into the gripping case that haunted the Beaumont, Texas, police department for over 25 years.In 1995, Edwards was found murdered in her home – an act that sent shockwaves through the community. The crime scene was harrowing. Texas Ranger Brandon Bess called it "unusual," describing how they found her over the bathtub and handcuffed behind her back.The investigation went cold for years, leaving friends and family without answers. However, recent advances in forensic science and tireless work by investigators revealed a startling twist: Edwards had been a bridesmaid at the killer's wedding.

Burkett was in the middle of a bitter custody dispute with Andrew Beard, the father of her 1-year-old daughter. On the day of the murder, Burkett's mother, Teresa Collard, is heard on police body cam video recalling something Burkett said about Beard, "… She even said, ‘I think he's the kind of person that's gonna try to kill me,' and he did. And he did. Oh my God." The all-new episode explores how the investigation quickly zeroed in on Beard. Carrollton Police detective Jeremy Chevallier recalls that the case took a clear direction from the start. "Within an hour of getting to the crime scene, we knew that we had needed to look for Andrew Beard," he says. But as it turned out, Beard was only the beginning of this complex story. Over the course of the investigation, detectives uncovered a twisted plot involving Beard's new fiancée, Holly Elkins. Police came to conclude she was the mastermind.

On Thanksgiving Eve in 2020, a horrifying scene unfolded in Mt. Morris, Ill. The home of 27-year-old Melissa Lamesch was engulfed in flames. Inside, firefighters discovered Lamesch's lifeless body on the kitchen floor. Initially, it was not clear if the fire killed her, and the investigation would uncover secrets.

On Oct. 31, 2020, in the small town of Hemphill, Texas, Darci Bass received devastating news: her daughter Livye Lewis had been shot in her car on the side of a road. Nearby, investigators found Lewis' ex-boyfriend Matthew Edgar bloodied and disoriented. From a hospital bed, Edgar insisted he had no recollection of what had happened. Captured in sheriff's office bodycam footage, he appears confused, saying, "I have no clue why I'm here."

Spivey, best known to viewers as the bailiff on "Justice for All with Judge Christina Perez," was charged with killing his wife in 2019. Spivey told the 911 operator he accidentally shot his wife during a fight over a gun.

Melissa Calusinski has been behind bars since 2009 when, at the age of 22, she was arrested for murdering 16-month-old Benjamin Kingan at a suburban Chicago daycare center where she worked. She has long maintained her innocence. 

A bright future was shattered when newly engaged Kevin Jiang, 26, a Yale graduate student and former Army National Guardsman, was gunned down in New Haven, Conn. What appeared to be a road rage incident soon unraveled into a story of obsession and premeditation.

The brutal murder of 17-year-old Justine Vanderschoot in 2003 devastated the community of Auburn, Calif. Twenty-two years later, Vanderschoot's family continues to fight to keep her killers behind bars after a change in state law provided a loophole that could set one of them free. 

Investigators suspected that oil on the road had come from the vehicle that struck McClendon. Following the oil trail, the sheriff's deputies were led to the home where Ackerman lived. Ackerman had spent the day with his three children, but investigators quickly noticed red flags, including his Ford pickup, which was leaking oil in the driveway. Its front grille was broken, and a palm print was visible on the hood.

The body of 22-year-old Cati Blauvelt was discovered in an abandoned farmhouse in Simpsonville, S.C., on Oct. 26, 2016. Almost immediately, her friends had one suspect in mind, John Blauvelt, Cati Blauvelt's estranged husband and a once-respected army recruiter. Their brief marriage had ended in turmoil, with Cati Blauvelt filing a domestic violence report against him. As police investigated, another name entered the picture, 17-year-old Hannah Thompson, who had moved in with John Blauvelt as his marriage unraveled. In June 1993, 35-year-old Jeanie Childs was found murdered in her apartment. Amongst the clues, there was a particularly unique one: bloody bare footprints. Investigators knew they had to belong to the killer because Childs had been found with her socks on. With no DNA match and no fingerprints to go on, the case went cold for decades. Years later, when the case was re-opened, investigators say those footprints helped them convict her killer.

Mike Sisco and his girlfriend Karen Harkness were gunned down in her Topeka, Kansas, home in 2002. Authorities believed it was a crime of passion. Sisco's daughter set out to help prove it was her mother, Dana Chandler, who was responsible.

Tim Bliefnick, a former contestant on the game show "Family Feud," was arrested, charged and convicted for the February 2023 murder of his estranged wife, Becky Bliefnick. Now, in his first TV interview after a jury found him guilty. Becky Bliefnick was found dead in her Quincy, Ill., home. She was shot multiple times. The case generated media attention when it was revealed that nearly two years before the couple separated, Tim Bliefnick appeared on "Family Feud." During the show, host Steve Harvey said to Bliefnick, "All right, Tim, we talked to 100 married people. What's the biggest mistake you made at your wedding?

A crime scene investigator is gunned down in broad daylight. The harrowing scene is captured on surveillance video. Who pulled the trigger? "48 Hours" correspondent Erin Moriarty reports.

It was New Year's Day 2021 when the San Diego Sheriff's Department got a call from a man saying his friend, an area woman named Jade Janks, might have killed her stepfather, Tom Merriman. In a story only on 48 HOURS.

Angela Brosso, 21, and Melanie Bernas, 17, were separately killed while riding their bikes along the Phoenix Canal.These murders became widely known as the Phoenix Canal Murders," says Briana Whitney, the true-crime reporter for CBS affiliate KPHO-TV in Phoenix.Investigators got a break 21 years after the murders when, thanks to DNA and genetic genealogy, they zeroed in on 42-year-old Bryan Patrick Miller, a divorced father raising his teenage daughter. Investigators soon found out that Miller had an alter ego. He was a local celebrity known for participating in parades and festivals as the "Zombie Hunter," a zombie-slaying comic book hero armed with a larger-than-life Gatling gun.Detectives just needed a sample of Miller's DNA to make the case or eliminate him as a suspect. That quest took them to a local Chili's.

Marlene Warren answered the door of her Florida home on May 26, 1990, to find a clown handing her balloons and flowers. In an instant, she was shot dead while her 21-year-old son looked on. Warren's son, Joe Aherns, opens up.The clown then calmly walked back to their car and drove away. 

On Dec. 14, 1991, 16-year-old honor student Sarah Yarborough was on her way to drill team practice at Federal Way High School outside Seattle, Wash. She never made it. She was found murdered just a hundred yards away from her car on the school's campus. Correspondent Natalie Morales speaks to key people who were involved in bringing Yarborough's killer to justice, including the first television interviews with Sarah's family and friends, and a woman who had been attacked by the same man years earlier.

Years before South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh was convicted for the murders of his wife and son, there was another mystery in Murdaugh country – the death of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old gay man. After his body was found on a country road on July 8, 2015, the medical examiner ruled it a hit and run. For years, his mother Sandy Smith wanted a second opinion. Now, 48 HOURS reports on a new investigation into the case. Early on, rumors that the Murdaughs were somehow involved in Smith's death spread through town. The Murdaugh name comes up dozens of times in the case file. The investigation seemingly went nowhere, and no suspects were named in Smith's death. In late 2016, the case went cold. It was reignited in June 2021 after the murders of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh. During that investigation, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced it had uncovered a new lead in Smith's death and would be taking over the case. But it has not said what that evidence is.

At 6:30 in the morning of April 25, 2010, Heidi Firkus called 911 after her husband, Nick Firkus, said an intruder was breaking into their home. She was shot and killed and Nick Firkus told investigators that his gun discharged when he struggled with the intruder. 

Millionaire business owner Andreen McDonald was known for her strict workout regimen. On the morning of March 1, 2019, when she didn't show up for work, her employees called the gym, which was her usual first stop in her morning routine. They found out she never showed up there either, which raised red flags. What happened to the businesswoman, wife and mother?

In the early morning of Sept. 22, 2020, police officer Gregorio De La Cruz responded to a call at a home in Laredo, Texas. At the top of the stairs of the house, Joel Pellot, dressed in surgical scrubs, was performing CPR on his wife, Maria Muñoz. Paramedics and police jumped in to help, but at 3:58 AM, less than three hours after Joel Pellot had called 9-1-1, 31-year-old Maria Muñoz was declared dead inside their home. Was Maria's death a suicide, an accident or a murder? Authorities turned to her journals for help.

On June 28, 2014, in the small town of Cottonport, La., 29-year-old Megan Parra was discovered in her home by her parents, Missy and Steve Ducote, with a gunshot wound to her head. Parra's husband, Dustin Parra, showed up minutes later and tried to save her. It was too late. She was taken off life support the next day. Her death was ruled a suicide, but Steve Ducote was convinced there was foul play.

On March 2, 2018, intruders entered the home of wealthy jewelers Ted and Corey Shaughnessy in Austin, Texas. A gunfight left 55-year-old Ted Shaughnessy dead. Investigators at first wondered if it was a random attack, a robbery gone wrong or a targeted assassination.

Cayley Mandadi was a 19-year-old sophomore at Trinity University when she arrived at a hospital in Texas on Oct. 29, 2017. She was nearly naked, bruised and not breathing. Her sometime boyfriend Mark Howerton told doctors they'd taken ecstasy at a music festival and she passed out after consensual sex in his car. She died at the hospital. Mandadi's mother and stepfather believed something far more sinister had happened and set out to prove it.

Before Kaitlin Armstrong was found guilty of killing professional gravel cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson, she was on the run in Costa Rica from the murder charge.But when investigators went to look for her, she was nowhere to be found. The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force got the job of tracking her down. They suspected Armstrong had flown to Costa Rica on May 18, 2022. There, she tried to hide her identity by using other names, Beth and Ari, and she cut and dyed her hair."48 Hours" contributor Jonathan Vigliotti has the first interview with members of the task force in "Capturing Moriah Wilson's Killer."

When Ray Wright, 55, suddenly lost contact with his family, they knew something was wrong. Two days later, his brother confronted an intruder in Ray Wright's home. What happened to Wright was a mystery. Then, 16 days after Ray Wright vanished, a high-speed chase gave police clues to what happened.

It's been almost four years since prominent L.A. therapist Amie Harwick was murdered on Feb. 15, 2020. For the first time, the man who tried to save her opens up about what happened. 

Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German was a local legend–renowned for his reporting on infamous mobsters, crooked politicians and murderers. But in September 2022, it was the reporter making headlines. German was ambushed and stabbed to death by an unknown assailant outside his home.

In the early morning hours of March 4, 2022, Kouri Richins says she found her husband, Eric Richins, unresponsive in their bed. First responders tried to save him, but it was too late for the father of three. Weeks later, police said Richins' death was caused by an overdose of fentanyl. The grieving widow from Utah was arrested and charged with murder shortly after she wrote a children's book to help their kids cope with grief.

Lyle and Erik Menendez have already spent nearly 34 years behind bars for gunning down their parents in 1989. Now they're awaiting a judge's decision on whether new evidence can support their claim that they killed in self-defense and should have been convicted of manslaughter instead of murder. Lyle Menendez gives his side of the story.

Well-known beauty executive Fabio Sementilli was sitting by his swimming pool when he was brutally stabbed to death. His body was discovered by his then 16-year-old daughter Isabella on Jan. 23, 2017. Prosecutors say his wife, Monica Sementilli, was secretly having an affair with racquetball instructor Robert Baker. Baker defends Monica Sementilli. 

Lamar Johnson was 21 in 1995 when he was charged with the murder of a friend, Markus Boyd. Johnson said he was several miles away with his girlfriend and daughter, but he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison primarily based on the testimony of Greg Elking, who picked Johnson out of a police lineup. Nearly three decades later, Johnson's conviction was vacated after Elking recanted his identification of Johnson. Now, Johnson tells the story of his fight to prove his innocence and Elking explains why he lied at Johnson's trial.

James Craig was a well-known dentist, who with his wife Angela Craig, was raising six children in Aurora, Colo. But on March 6, 2023, Angela Craig reported feeling sick and her husband took her to the hospital. Doctors could not determine why Angela was so sick. Two hectic weeks later, after being put on life support, Angela Craig was dead. Her autopsy revealed she had been poisoned and police claim the evidence pointed to her husband. 

In 2001, a California mother and wife, Jane Dorotik, was convicted of murdering her husband but always maintained her innocence. From prison, Dorotik spent years filing motions asking for new testing of evidence, which was eventually done. Dorotik and her legal team say they discovered serious problems with some of that evidence. 

On May 24, 2019, Jennifer Farber Dulos dropped off her five children at school, drove to her Connecticut home, and was never seen again. Dulos' estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, was charged with her murder, but after he died by suicide the focus turned to his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis. On March 1, 2024, Troconis was found guilty of conspiring with Fotis Dulos to murder Jennifer Dulos and covering it up. 

When a 26-year-old mother of two, Madeline "Maddi" Kingsbury, from Winona, Minn., went missing, her distraught sister headed to TikTok and pleaded with the public to help find her. For 68 days, Megan Kingsbury documented her sister's disappearance.

In October 2023, Jessy Kurczewski went on trial for the intentional homicide of Lynn Hernan, along with two counts of felony theft for stealing from Hernan. Five years earlier, Kurczewski called the police and told them she found Hernan dead, sitting in her recliner, in the living room of her Pewaukee, Wis., condo. Kurczewski told investigators she had been helping take care of her friend, who had been struggling with health problems. Almost three years later, she was charged with poisoning that friend with eye drops. 

In the early morning hours of Halloween 2019 in Hays, Kansas, Colby Trickle called 911 and said he woke up to his ears ringing and saw his wife, Kristen Trickle, bleeding next to him in the bed. Responding officers found Kristen Trickle, 26, clinging to life. What happened was a mystery.

On May 8, 2018, detective Brian Fanion dialed 911. When Massachusetts State Police detectives Brendan O'Toole and Mike Blanchette arrived at the scene, they found 51-year-old Amy Fanion dead on the dining room floor. According to Brian Fanion, the couple had been arguing about his retirement plans, and at some point, Amy Fanion picked up his service weapon and shot herself. Investigators did not believe his story.

He spent nearly 20 years in prison before a new law passed in Missouri that made him eligible for parole. Now 38 and out on parole, Michael Politte claims he knows who is responsible for killing his mother and talks with 48 HOURS correspondent Erin Moriarty.

On Sept. 4, 1981, Jeff and Tim Slaten were awakened by Lakeland, Fla., police and told that their mother, Linda Slaten, had been murdered. Jeff was 15 and Tim was 12. Investigators collected a rape kit and lifted a palm print from the windowsill where the killer had entered. They questioned a slew of suspects, but no one was charged. The case went cold. Prior to and after Linda Slaten's murder, Tim Slaten's football coach, Joe Mills, would regularly drive Slaten to and from football practice. Coach Joe became a role model for Slaten, who proudly hung up his football team photo in his room where Coach Joe stood right behind him. But nearly 40 years later, advances in DNA technology and a carefully stored rape kit revealed Linda Slaten's likely killer: Coach Joe. 48 HOURS and contributor Jim Axelrod report on how detectives and a DNA genealogist finally were able to catch Joe Mills.

On Oct. 10, 2019, Joseph Elledge, then 23, reported his wife, Mengqi Ji, missing. Elledge told Columbia, Mo., police that he believed his wife may have left him and their 1-year-old daughter for another man with whom he said she had an online relationship. But when police searched the couple's apartment, they found a muddy pair of Elledge's boots - evidence that would become important months later, after Ji's remains were found buried under a juniper tree. Elledge's boots were found to have several juniper tree needles stuck to the soles. 48 HOURS correspondent Peter Van Sant reports on how DNA from those needles was linked to the tree directly above Ji's shallow grave, providing prosecutors with the evidence they needed to help convict Elledge of her murder.

Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns, two brilliant best friends who once wrote a screenplay about two boys wrongfully accused of murder, are now caught up in a real-life murder mystery. They are accused of murdering Rafay's family, from the upper middle-class community of Bellevue, Wash., near Seattle. The brutal murders took place in July 1994. Correspondent Peter Van Sant reports on this 10-year mystery that led investigators to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and involved secret videotaped operations by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

In July 1957 two young police officers on a routine traffic stop in El Segundo, Calif., a Los Angeles suburb, were gunned down and murdered by a man who the police did not know had just committed robbery and rape at a nearby lover's lane. Dennis Priven, a 24-year-old fellow Peace Corps worker from Brooklyn, N.Y., who friends say was obsessed with Gardner, was charged with her murder by Tongan police. But in a bizarre turn of events, Priven avoided going to prison for Gardner's murder and received a clean record from the Peace Corps. Many today are left wondering if justice was served and if the Peace Corps was trying to protect the murderer.

Cherry Hammock of Crawford County, Ga. says she killed her husband, Jay, in self-defense in September 2001, but prosecutors say it was murder.

Maria Cruz, a successful, 35-year-old New York City financial analyst, disappeared on the afternoon of April 13, 2003. For 10 months, police were unable to find Cruz, but the trail of evidence finally pointed to a man named Dean Faiello, who posed as a doctor and is believed to have treated Cruz for a mouth infection the day she went missing. In February 2004, acting on a tip from Faiello's former lover, Greg Bach, authorities found Cruz's body stuffed in a suitcase and buried in the cement in the garage of Faiello's former home in Newark, N. J. Just one month later -- 11 months after Maria Cruz was reported missing -- Dean Faiello was under arrest for Cruz's murder in Costa Rica.

It happened in the summer of 2002 during a wild July 4th weekend of partying in the wealthy community of Newport Beach, Calif. When it was over, three teenage boys would be accused of rape and face the prospect of spending life in prison. The critical evidence was a videotape the defendants made themselves. 48 HOURS MYSTERY has new clues in Los Angeles' most famous unsolved murder, the 57-year-old Black Dahlia case. The brutal murder of Elizabeth Short, a young, beautiful, struggling actress whose body was discovered in a vacant lot in January 1947, has baffled the Los Angeles Police Department for decades.

In August 1993, 13-year-old Eric Smith made national headlines as a red-haired, freckle-faced killer. Smith's looks and age were so completely at odds with the horrific crime -- he was convicted of murdering four-year-old Derrick Robie -- that he nearly got away it. Until now, Smith has never explained why he killed Robie. Police investigators and veteran prosecutors found it difficult to comprehend that this child could kill another child in such a brutal way.
